Aviation Eye Candy Photo Page Index - Click Here

Karl B., a Canadian internet surfer found my Eye Candy pages and asked it I could do a Vancouver page.  So, here it is, Karl.

In the mid-1960s, I spent a lot of my free time photographing interesting airplanes in the Seattle area.   But, after a bit, I had exhausted most of the opportunities at Sea-Tac, Renton, Boeing Field, etc.  It was then that my good friend and fellow aviation fan Ted Gibson and I expanded our coverage area.  We began making regular trips to Vancouver, where we found great new opportunities at YVR - Vancouver International.  Like most airports of the day, roaming the ramps freely with camera in hand presented no problem whatsoever.

For David C.:  No Wide-bodies in the 60s, David!

With engines running, it amazes me how I got out there taking photos from the ramp side.
Well, if I didn't have these pictures, people would call me a liar.

I just hate those cluttered pictures taken from the Terminal.

An ex-Qantas airplane, it was wet-leased from Standard Airways in Seattle.

Here is N791SA in Seattle

The airplane was lost in a landing accident at YVR - when it departed the runway in fog and struck buildings.

On the night of 7 Feb 1968, the airplane was returning from HNL, when it crashed at YVR, while trying to land in dense fog.  It ran through a bunch of smaller airplanes and equipment and hit an airport building, nearly crashing into the main terminal.  There were two fatalities (the Purser and  an airport worker in the struck building) and the airplane was written off.

Formed in the 1940s, Pacific Western was a large Canadian regional airline based in Vancouver.  In 1987, it bought Canadian Pacific, forming Canadian Airlines International.  Canadian regional carriers Transair, Nordair, and Eastern Provincial were later absorbed as well.  In 2001, Air Canada acquired the whole conglomerate.
