Messerschmidt Me-163 Komet
Only rocket powered fighter aircraft - reached 700 mph.

During the 6 years I spent as Boeing Rep at Honolulu, we changed a lot of engines!
The Pratt JT9D was very unreliable; we could have an engine failure every day.
These usually required an engine change, since the failures were not "minor."
Usually - an airplane arrived with an engine shutdown.
Inspection often revealed MIT - Metal in Tailpipe - broken turbine blades.

Spare engines were carried back and forth using 5th engine pods - as shown here.
I think we averaged about 50 5th Pod Installations/Removals per month.
In addition to failed engine changes, United did scheduled engine changes in HNL.
The time differences allowed them to do the engine change during the over-night.
The airplane would arrive carrying the spare; it was installed
and the removed engine was carried as a 5th Pod for return to SFO.

SpaceShipOne
SpaceShipOne completed the first crewed private spaceflight in 2004.
That same year, it won the US$10 million Ansari X Prize
and was immediately retired from active service.
It currently hangs in the Smithsonian.
